Challenge
A senior executive within the research and not-for-profit sector was progressing through a competitive recruitment process for an Executive Director role within a purpose-driven organisation.
While she brought extensive experience across research leadership, policy, stakeholder engagement, and sector advocacy, she had not previously held a formal Executive Director or CEO title. She wanted to ensure she positioned herself credibly and confidently at Board level throughout the recruitment process.
Although her background strongly aligned with the organisation’s strategic priorities, she recognised that stepping into a first-time Executive Director role required more than demonstrating capability alone. She needed to communicate executive readiness, organisational oversight, financial accountability, and leadership confidence at the level expected by the Board.
The challenge was not whether she had the experience. It was ensuring she positioned that experience at an Executive Director level.
Approach
Our work focused on strengthening her executive positioning and helping her transition her narrative from senior functional leadership to Executive Director readiness.
Rather than focusing solely on interview technique, the coaching process centred on helping her communicate broader leadership impact, strategic capability, and organisational oversight.
Through tailored coaching and interview preparation sessions, we refined how she articulated her leadership story, professional achievements, and readiness to lead at organisational level. Particular attention was given to strengthening her response to “Tell me about yourself,” communicating financial and governance accountability, and preparing for Board-level questions with greater clarity, confidence, and strategic perspective.
We also developed and refined a five-minute Board presentation focused on her leadership journey, sector contribution, and executive readiness.
Solution
Through tailored interview preparation, mock interviews, and real-time coaching feedback, her delivery, structure, and executive communication became significantly stronger and more aligned with the level of the role.
Together, we refined how she communicated leadership ownership, strategic accountability, and organisational impact while ensuring her responses remained concise, structured, and authentic.
Her Board presentation was transformed into a confident executive narrative that clearly articulated her leadership capability, sector understanding, and readiness to step into the Executive Director role.
Most importantly, she moved from questioning her readiness for the position to presenting herself with far greater confidence, credibility, and executive presence.
Experience
The client described the coaching process as transformative, highlighting the clarity, structure, and confidence it brought to both her interview preparation and executive positioning.
Following the recruitment process, she successfully secured the Executive Director role after endorsement by the Board.
One of the most valuable outcomes from this engagement was reinforcing that stepping into a first-time Executive Director or CEO role is not simply about having the right experience.
It is about being able to communicate that experience with clarity, strategic alignment, and executive presence at the level expected by senior leadership panels and Boards.
